April showers bring May flowers—and that's exactly how April got its name. It's derived from the verb "aperire," which means "to open," since April marks the start of the "opening" (or blooming) of beautiful trees and flowers around the world. There are as many national days in April as there are flowers, and we're excited to celebrate them all with you!
Pull out your April calendar and write down some of these exciting national days.
ACTIVITY HOLIDAYS: We don't have any holidays in April on our calendar. Just kidding, April Fools (April 1)! If you don't like practical jokes but still love to get down, you might enjoy International Dance Day (April 29) or World Party Day (April 3).
FOOD HOLIDAYS: Did you know that garlic was worshipped by Egyptians as a god—and even used as currency? We still love it today, and that's why there's a national day in April for Garlic Day (April 19)! It's the month of comfort foods—it's also National Burrito Day (April 6) and National Grilled Cheese Day (April 12).
PET HOLIDAYS: While we don't need a reason to celebrate our pet, we're always glad to have an excuse—so we love that one of our April holidays is National Pet Day (April 11). There are 70-80 million dogs and 74-96 million cats owned in the U.S. alone—lots of happy owners to celebrate with!
DRINKING HOLIDAYS: Arguably the most important day on our calendar is National Beer Day on April 7 (although National Pretzel Day on April 26 is pretty important too—what would we snack on with our beer?). Did you know beer is the world's most widely consumed alcoholic beverage?
