April Fools’ Day – April 1

When that first day of April rolls around, have you ever found yourself reaching for the sugar for your morning coffee, quickly realizing the sweetener had been switched out with salt? Have you taken a bite of your beloved jelly-filled donut only to find that the gooey goodness had been replaced with mayonnaise? Then you, my friend, might have been a victim of a good old April Fools’ Day prank! April Fools’ Day is celebrated every year on April 1, giving mischief-makers the chance to play tricks on the unsuspecting for that annual opportunity to yell “April Fools!” Though the day has many origin stories, you likely have Pope Gregory XII and the update of his Gregorian calendar to thank. In 1582, he switched the first day of the year from April 1 to January 1. Many refused to acknowledge the new start of the year, and were soon mocked and tricked for not jumping on board. Keep an eye out on this April 1 to make sure you don’t fall prey again. Even better? Turn the fool into the fooler and come up with a few sly tricks of your own.

National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day – April 2

National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day is celebrated every year on April 2. Did you know that the average American will have eaten over two thousand peanut butter and jelly sandwiches by the time they graduate high school? In 1901, the first reference was published of peanut butter paired with jelly on bread, by Julia Davis Chandler of the good ol' USA. Make this day a memorable one celebrating one of America’s classic sandwiches.

National Hug a Newsperson Day – April 4

Warm up those hugging muscles, because on April 4, we’re showing our appreciation for newspeople in a big way. That’s right, we’re psyched to celebrate National Hug a Newsperson Day! This is the day that we give huge shout outs to everyone who helps us stay updated—from major anchors like Anderson Cooper to that weather guy who correctly pronounced Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch without skipping a beat. (Look it up—it’s amazing. He deserves the biggest hug of all.) So get ready to hug your favorite news anchor, even if that means wrapping your TV in a super weird embrace.

National Deep Dish Pizza Day – April 5

Is there a day that better honors The Windy City than the one Ferris Bueller took off? Try National Deep Dish Pizza Day! Every April 5, celebrate with all of the sauce, cheese and toppings you crave, but make sure you’ve got a fork to make sure you don’t miss any of the deep, thick bread in the kind of pizza that put Chicago on the map (that is, of course, apart from the fire, Al Capone, Peter Cetera’s band and Michael Jordan).

National Walking Day – April 5

If you’ve allowed your fitness resolutions for the New Year to lapse, National Walking Day is the opportunity to rekindle your goals. (No excuses this time!) The American Heart Association is the sponsor of this day, held on the first Wednesday of April each year. Beyond the health benefits that walking can provide, it is a great way to reconnect with friends and family too. And with National Walking Day in the spring, people can’t use lousy winter weather around New Year’s Day as an reason to stay indoors. (See? We said no excuses.)
