Perfume Day – April 14, 2025

Perfume Day is celebrated on April 14. Do you collect perfumes to wear for different occasions? If so, the day can be for you to add another to your perfume collection. What’s your preferred type — eau de toilette, eau de parfum, or extrait? Whatever it is, ensure you know how to store and apply the perfumes best. If you already did, excellent. If you didn’t, well, it’s not really an issue. You can store and wear your perfumes however you see fit. But, it’ll be good to know, right? So, let’s talk about this pleasant smell.

History of Perfume Day

Perfume has been around and used by people for many years. It’s not only used to create pleasant smells on the body but also used to create a distraction from unpleasant smells. The word perfume is derived from the Latin words ‘per fumum,’ meaning ‘through the smoke.’ Incense was the first form of perfume and was commonly used for religious rituals by ancient Egyptians. Perfume is usually made of essential oils, aromatic compounds, alcohol, and water. And the ratio of essential oil to alcohol determines the intensity and longevity of the perfume.

Perfume has several types based on the alcohol-essential oil ratio. They are: parfum or extrait or also known as pure perfume, perfume extract, or simply perfume, 20-30% essential oil; eau de parfum, 15-20% essential oil; eau de toilette, 5-15% essential oil; eau de cologne or simply cologne, 2-4% essential oil, and; eau fraîche, 1-3% essential oil. Different perfumeries put different amounts of essential oils into their perfume products. For example, an E.D.P. from one perfumery may have a lesser concentration of essential oil than an E.D.T. from another.

Perfume also has three classes of notes. First is the top notes, also known as opening notes or head notes — the scent you immediately notice after spritzing perfume, usually citrusy, fruity, or herby (bergamot, grapefruit, basil). Second is the middle notes or heart notes, the core of your perfume — the scent that comes after the first one’s started fading, usually floral (lavender, geranium, juniper). The third is the base notes — the scent remaining about an hour after your first spritz (vanilla, jasmine, patchouli). So, which opening notes do you like most?

  2. Apply it the right way

Do you expect the perfume to last longer on your body? Apply it to your pulse points. And, don’t rub your wrists together; it’s a big no-no. Just tap your wrists together or dab your wrist anywhere you see fit. Layer your perfume with body oil or lotion to enhance the scent.
