Ah, May. The sun's shining, summer's starting, and all is well in the world. It's all thanks to the god Maya, the god of fertility, if you ask the Ancient Romans. They honored her by naming the month of May after her! While we may not be celebrating Maya this month, there are plenty other holidays in May worth commemorating.
So take our your May calendar and mark down some of this month's highlights!
FOOD AND DRINK: In true Maya style, there are an abundance of May holidays dedicated to our favorite pastime at National Today: eating and drinking. Celebrate National Eat What You Want Day (May 11) and National Hamburger Day (May 28), and then wash it down with wine (May 25), moscato (May 9), or even a mimosa (May 16)!
INTERNATIONAL: Did you know Cinco de Mayo (May 5), one of the most important international holidays in May, doesn't actually commemorate the day of Mexican independence? It actually celebrates their victory in the Battle of the Puebla. Tell that fun fact to your mom on Mother's Day (May 14)!
RELATIONSHIPS: 80% of Americans have one sibling or more, and that's why there are two holidays in May to celebrate our most fulfilling relationships: National Brother's Day (May 24) and National Brothers and Sisters Day (May 2).
ACTIVITIES: Get out the barbecue and celebrate Memorial Day (May 29). But make sure you save time to celebrate May holidays like Star Wars Day (May the Fourth be With You) and National Scavenger Hunt Day (May 24).
