What is the significance of May holidays?

May was named for the Greek goddess Maia, who embodied fertility. The month's most famous holiday — the eponymous May Day — similarly celebrates the bounty of new life, and is chock full of pre-Christian vernal rites. Of course, there are plenty of modern celebrations in May as well, including National Have a Coke Day (May 8th) and Star Wars Day (on May the 4th, of course).

What are some memorable May holiday moments?

May commemorates a few key moments in history. On May 22nd Harvey Milk Day celebrates the birth of Harvey Milk — the first openly gay politician in California and a prominent leader of the American Civil Rights Movement.

Memorial Day (May 28th), interestingly, was historically placed at the end of May because the dates did not fall near the anniversary of any major Civil War battle — which meant it could serve as a day of remembrance for all veterans.
