History of Send an Electronic Greeting Card Day

If you’re reading this article on a computer, a smartphone, or a tablet, then you’re probably already familiar with the concept of electronic greeting cards because they’ve been around for a while now and are here to stay. Electronic greeting cards, sometimes known as e-cards, are widely used these days. They are comparable to traditional greeting cards, with the exception that they are made digitally and sent via email. Though traditionally delivered via email and accessed using a computer, several types of greeting cards are now available for distribution through social media platforms and via smartphones and other mobile devices, among other methods. E-cards can be delivered to a single recipient or a group of recipients at the same time. Customized greeting cards are typically selected from an online inventory and then personalized with photographs, videos, and a message by the sender. The card firm is responsible for delivering the card to the receiver on the sender’s behalf.

Back in the late 1990s, when the majority of Americans were just getting their hands on home computers, you might recall all of the animated greeting cards that were sent out via email. While the low-resolution graphics of those cards may seem dated now, receiving an animated greeting card was a big deal back then.

In late 1994, while researching at the M.I.T. Media Lab, Judith Donath established The Electric Postcard, which was the world’s first website for sending electronic greeting cards. It began slowly, but by the late spring of 1996, more than 1.7 million cards were being sent out worldwide. By this time, several other e-card websites launched shortly after. Over the years, there have been significant modifications to electronic greeting cards with things like Telegram, Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp stickers now the norm, but the basic premise has remained the same throughout.
