Pet Sitter Safety Month Hero

Patti J. Moran

Patti J. Moran is the founder of Pet Sitters International (P.S.I.), the organization behind Pet Sitter Safety Month. A pioneer in the professional pet-sitting industry, Moran established P.S.I. in 1994 to provide education, certification, and support for pet-sitting businesses worldwide. Her work has been instrumental in professionalizing the industry and advocating for the safety and well-being of both pets and their caregivers.

History of Pet Sitter Safety Month

Unlike the National Pet Sitters Week that began in 1995, Pet Sitter Safety Month was only initiated some years ago in 2017 by Pet Sitters International (P.S.I.). The holiday is celebrated throughout May and urges pet sitters to ensure safety by examining PSI’s safety tips to keep themselves and their pets healthy.

It is essential to know that, without pet sitting, there would not be any pet sitters’ holiday. Pet sitting as a profession started when Patti J. Moran began her own pet-sitting business in North Carolina, in 1983. Back then, society did not recognize pet sitting as a profession, and people did not choose it as a career path. Word of Moran’s business venture soon spread to other parts of the country. With a newfound audience, Moran published her book, “Pet Sitting for Profit,” in 1987. And, in a few years, several others had taken up the pet-sitting trade. By 1989, Moran had formed the National Association of Pet Sitters and in 1994, she founded Pet Sitters International with members from across the world — all professional pet sitters and dog walkers.

Today, there are several pet-sitting businesses in the U.S., Canada, and over 15 other countries. With the blossoming industry comes the need for proper education, resources and safety measures, further emphasizing the need for the annual campaign. This is why we have Pet Sitter Safety Month.
