Christian Aid Week Hero

Reverend John Collins

Reverend John Collins (1905–1982) was an Anglican priest and a prominent peace and anti-apartheid campaigner. He was instrumental in the founding of Christian Aid in 1945, initially as the Christian Committee for European Refugees, to help those displaced by World War II. His vision laid the groundwork for the organization's enduring commitment to humanitarian relief and social justice, which continues through events like Christian Aid Week.

History of Christian Aid Week

Christian Aid Week evolved through different phases before becoming what it is today. During World War II, many people were displaced from their homes and left homeless. The British and Irish churches then established an organization called Christian Reconstruction in Europe (C.R.E.) to raise funds for the resettlement of the millions of people left homeless by the war. It was then renamed the Inter-Church Aid and Refugee Service in 1948 and became part of the British Council of Churches. The organization began to move into worldwide development work during the decade that followed.

In 1957, Janet Lacey, the director of the organization at the time, decided to hold a Christian Aid Week to encourage public awareness. The event mobilized residents in 200 towns and villages across Britain and collected ÂŁ26,000 for overseas development work. The name was then changed to Christian Aid in 1964. In the 1960s, the threat of hunger and famine made agricultural development a priority in the poorest regions of the world, especially Africa and Asia. As well as overseas aid, Christian Aid began to sensitize church supporters and schools on the causes of poverty and helped establish the World Development Movement.

In recent times, delivery-only envelopes have been used to obtain donations for Christian Aid Week. These envelopes could be brought to homes and did not require personal collection by local collectors and would be posted to Christian Aid or handed in at pre-arranged points instead. In recent times, online donations have also become favored.
