Micronesia Constitution Day – May 10, 2024

Micronesia Constitution Day is observed on May 10 every year, and we are giving you the low-down on everything from their country to their cuisine and, yep, you guessed it — their constitution. This relatively small country comprises over 600 islands, boasts four regional languages, has over nine ethnic groups, and has a population of 104,468. But we are here to commemorate the adoption of their constitution, which took place in 1979, the same year the U.S. Voyager One space probe produced photos revealing the rings around Jupiter for the first time.

History of Micronesia Constitution Day

Micronesia, also known as the Federated States of Micronesia, is an Oceanian island country consisting of four states spread across the western Pacific, from west to east; Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei, and Kosrae. The states have a total of 607 islands — that’s over 600 islands belonging to a single country. They’re also known for having one of the most diverse and unique constitutions globally.

Following its preparation in June 1975, its constitution — known as the highest legislation of the Federated States of Micronesia — was used for the first time in May 1979. It was ratified on October 1, 1978, and implemented on May 10, 1979, which became Micronesia Constitution Day. Their constitution is based on Micronesia’s former trustee, the United States. Still, unlike the United States, it has a unicameral legislature — a type of legislature composed of a single house or assembly that legislates and votes as one.

Their particular unicameral legislature is known as the national congress, which boasts 14 senators. Four of them serve four-year terms representing the four states, while the other 10 are apportioned by population and serve two-year terms. Furthermore, the National Congress is in charge of electing the President and Vice President. On the anniversary of the adoption of its constitution, Micronesia celebrates it with a national holiday.
