Walter Lantz
History of Woody Woodpecker Day
Cartoonist Walter Lantz created Woody, an anthropomorphic woodpecker, in 1940. He worked with Ben Hardaway, a storyboard artist who is also behind the characters Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck in the late 1930s. “The Woody Woodpecker Show,” featuring a fresh video of Woody and live-action footage of Lantz, was originally broadcast on television in 1957. Lantz lasted longer than most of his contemporaries in producing theatrical cartoons and Woody Woodpecker remained a fixture of universal’s release schedule until 1972 when Lantz eventually closed his studio. For particular performances and occasions after, the character was resurrected.
Woody woodpecker got his very own theme song when musicians George Tibbles and Ramey Idriss penned ‘The Woody Woodpecker Song’ in 1947. The song made extensive use of the character’s renowned chuckle. In the 1988 film, “Who Framed Roger Rabbit,” Woody also had a cameo appearance among several other well-known cartoon characters.
“The New Woody Woodpecker Show,” a Saturday morning cartoon television series starring prolific voice actor Billy West as Woody, aired from 1999 to 2002. In 2017, the live-action/C.G.I. hybrid feature film “Woody Woodpecker” was released theatrically in Latin America and direct-to-video in the rest of the world. Universal Animation Studios announced in 2018 that a new series of Woody Woodpecker cartoons would be released exclusively on YouTube. On December 3, 2018, the show simply titled “Woody Woodpecker,” began streaming.
