NationalToday.com has helped readers discover and celebrate holidays, national observances, and cultural traditions since 2017. Our calendar covers thousands of days, from federal holidays and religious observances to awareness months and lighthearted national days. These standards explain how we research, write, review, and maintain that content.
What we publish
We publish original content about holidays, observances, cultural traditions, and lifestyle topics. Each holiday page aims to answer what readers want to know: when the day falls, where it came from, why it matters, and how to celebrate or observe it.
How we research holidays
Every holiday on our calendar is researched before it is published.
- Origins. We trace each day to its source wherever possible, such as a government proclamation, congressional resolution, religious calendar, founding organization, or the person who created it. When an origin is uncertain or disputed, we say so.
- Dates. We verify how each date is set, whether it is fixed, falls on a set weekday, or follows a lunar or religious calendar, and we calculate future dates from those rules.
- Sources. We rely on primary and authoritative sources: official proclamations, government and institutional websites, historical records, and the organizations behind observances. We avoid relying on a single secondary source.
- Context. We add history, cultural background, and practical ideas that help readers understand and take part in the day.
How we decide what to include
We include a day when there is evidence it is observed, recognized, or promoted by a government, institution, community, or organization. Many national days are created by organizations, advocacy groups, or companies. When that is the case, we identify who founded the day so readers know its origin.
How our content is written and reviewed
Our editorial team researches and writes each article, and an editor reviews it for accuracy, clarity, and sourcing before publication. We review holiday pages on a regular cycle so dates, facts, and context stay current, and we update them when new information becomes available.
How we use AI
We may use AI tools to assist with research, outlining, or updating existing pages. A member of our editorial team reviews, edits, and approves all content before it is published, and is responsible for its accuracy.
We do not publish AI summaries or rewrites of other publishers’ articles, automated summaries of news feeds, or pages generated at scale anywhere on this site.
Sources and attribution
When we reference another publication’s reporting or research, we credit it. We do not republish other publishers’ work.
Submit a holiday
Know of a holiday or observance we are missing? We welcome submissions from readers, organizations, and the people who founded a day. Submit it through our holiday form at https://forms.nationaltoday.com/holiday-content and choose “Select new holiday” under Submission Type. Include:
- The name and date of the observance
- Who founded or recognizes it
- How it began, with links to sources such as a proclamation, an official website, or press coverage
- How people observe or celebrate it
Our editorial team reviews every submission using the same research standards above. Not every submission is added, and submitting a day does not guarantee publication.
Corrections and updates
Every article has a link at the top of the page where readers can submit a correction or an update to the story. You can also email us at publishing-standards@nationaltoday.com. Our editorial team reviews submissions daily and responds within 48 hours, typically within one day. Significant corrections are noted on the page.
