Middle Level Education Month – March 2024

Middle-Level Education Month is celebrated in March every year. A group of organizations came together to declare the annual holiday. They include the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NA.S.S.P.), the Association for Middle-Level Education, the National Forum to Accelerate Middle-Grades Reform, and the National Association of Elementary Principals. This month-long holiday intends to shine a light on young adolescents who are in a crucial stage of their academic years and psychological development. During Middle-Level Education Month, Middle-level educators and administrators in the U.S. seek to continually encourage the public to be more active in supporting middle-level education.

History of Middle Level Education Month

The Association for Middle-Level Education, the National Forum to Accelerate Middle-Grades Reform, the National Association of Elementary Principals, and the National Association of Secondary School Principals (N.A.S.S.P.), founded Middle-Level Education Month. The event has been celebrated on Facebook and Twitter since 2016.

In 2019, a member of the United States Congress, Rep. Raúl M. Grijalva, celebrated Public Schools Week by submitting a resolution in the House of Representatives to recognize March as National Middle-Level Education Month. In the same year, he introduced the Success in the Middle Act to Increase Funding for Middle-Grade Education. The resolution identifies the essential role that middle-level education plays in the formative years of adolescents and praises middle-level educators and administrators for their efforts. Rep. Grijalva released a video statement to discuss his devotion to supporting public schools.

In 2021, Raúl M. Grijalva reintroduced the Success in the Middle Act alongside a resolution establishing March as Middle-Level Education Month. The bill provides targeted grants to States and districts to create comprehensive school-wide action plans, develop rigorous curriculum, provide professional development for school personnel, and implement evidence-based student supports for middle-grade students.

N.A.S.S.P. announced that it was pleased to work with Congressman Grijalva once again on the reintroduction of Success in the Middle Act and showed it is well in support of the bill to make Middle-level education a national holiday.
