The Association for Middle-Level Education, the National Forum to Accelerate Middle-Grades Reform, the National Association of Elementary Principals, and the National Association of Secondary School Principals (N.A.S.S.P.), founded Middle-Level Education Month. The event has been celebrated on Facebook and Twitter since 2016.
In 2019, a member of the United States Congress, Rep. Raúl M. Grijalva, celebrated Public Schools Week by submitting a resolution in the House of Representatives to recognize March as National Middle-Level Education Month. In the same year, he introduced the Success in the Middle Act to Increase Funding for Middle-Grade Education. The resolution identifies the essential role that middle-level education plays in the formative years of adolescents and praises middle-level educators and administrators for their efforts. Rep. Grijalva released a video statement to discuss his devotion to supporting public schools.
In 2021, Raúl M. Grijalva reintroduced the Success in the Middle Act alongside a resolution establishing March as Middle-Level Education Month. The bill provides targeted grants to States and districts to create comprehensive school-wide action plans, develop rigorous curriculum, provide professional development for school personnel, and implement evidence-based student supports for middle-grade students.
