National Hotel Slipper Day – March 1, 2025

National Hotel Slipper Day takes place on March 1. We bet you didn’t know that we need to thank Justin Bieber for the existence of National Hotel Slipper Day. You read that right; this special day was established as a result of the pop star’s love for comfortable footwear and inspired by a collection of widely publicized paparazzi photographs of the singer spotted wearing them. What’s even more surprising is how long slippers have been around and that the Japanese essentially invented them. But more on that further down, for now, make some tea and slip into something more comfortable.

History of National Hotel Slipper Day

On March 1, 1994, a baby boy was born in Ontario, Canada. No one knew that he would grow up to become one of the most successful pop stars of our time and that 25 years later, he would inspire a day so special it encourages people to take trips and go away on holiday. We’re, of course, talking about Justin Bieber and how in 2019, after he was spotted all of the previous year wearing complimentary hotel slippers instead of sneakers, “Hotels.com” dubbed his birthday National Hotel Slipper Day.

Did you know that we have been sliding our feet into the comfort of slippers in the Western world for over 500 years? Yep, people have been wearing slippers around their homes since 1478, the same year in which the Spanish inquisition began. But so much can be said about this cozy, convenient footwear and how it has stayed with us over the years and adapted to the different needs of various countries and cultures.

Slippers, for one, are incredibly prevalent in Japan. Culturally, people are required to leave their shoes at the entrance to every place in Japan, from private houses to restaurants and hotels, because Japanese people believe that the feet should breathe after a long day of work. They may give you a pair of slippers to wear inside, but keep in mind that your feet need to breathe and rest. In Europe, the 18th century was the golden age of slippers, which were usually associated with luxury and wealth, and only the upper classes and royalty would own a pair.

It is not known when hotel slippers first became a popular way to show guests hospitality, but it is a staple in just about any hotel worldwide. But little did anyone know that it would take Justin Bieber’s adoration of this comfortable footwear to lead to an official national day.

National Hotel Slipper Day FAQs

Why do hotels have slippers?

Slippers are quickly becoming one of the most essential amenities offered by hotels all over the world. Hotel slippers were created to allow guests to move around the room, including the bathroom, in comfortable and clean footwear.

Are hotel slippers clean?

When you check into a hotel, you will get brand new slippers, but you should think about washing them in a machine when you get home from your trip. You can prevent them from becoming out of shape by using a gentle cycle. Toss them in with the regular wash in a washing machine bag, just like you would a sweater.

Are Justin Bieber’s Drew House slippers comfy?

They’re super soft and ideal for Drew House guests and anyone who likes slipping their feet into something cozy at the end of the day. And the Drew House website often has sales, so keep an eye on that.

National Hotel Slipper Day Activities

  1. Book yourself into a hotel

If you want the authentic experience of getting hotel slippers upon arrival at a hotel, then make a little trip out of it. Find a weekend that suits you, and perhaps a guest, and book yourself into a hotel for a couple of nights. Once you get there, get into your robe and slide on the slippers to take some funky photos for Instagram. You can walk around the hotel, carry them in your bag, and even take them home.

  2. Buy some new slippers for home

Let’s face it; slippers can get dirty and worn out quickly, especially if you love wearing them around the house for comfort. White slippers particularly seem to get dirty the fastest. So, pop on over to your neighborhood mall and get yourself a brand new pair to enjoy for the next couple of months to a year. You can always buy bulk from hotel providers; you just need to know where to go.

  3. Gift someone a pair of cozy slippers

When you give someone a pair of slippers as a gift, you are saying to them that they need to relax and take a load off. It is a very thoughtful gift, especially for someone who spends their entire day on their feet, so they have something cozy and comfortable to come home to. In fact, it’s probably also the perfect Mother’s Day gift. You’re welcome.

Why We Love National Hotel Slipper Day

  1. They make us feel at home

Slippers are the first thing most people put on when they get home after a long day at work, so when we travel and put on our complimentary hotel slippers, we instantly feel at home. There is no better treat than being thousands of miles away from your house and having that feeling of comfort that you would usually have at home.

  2. We can take them with us when we leave

Not a lot in life is free for the taking, and with hotels, some in-house rules depend solely on whoever is running that establishment, but at most hotels, you should be able to take your slippers with you when you leave. Imagine the joy when you get home from your trip, and you have these brand-new slippers to enjoy.

  3. It celebrates someone’s passion for comfort

Comfort is something we should not take lightly. In this world, everyone works hard to earn enough money to live and do exciting things on some occasions. But the one thing we all have in common is our need for comfort after a long day or when we just need to relax.
