National Goat Yoga Month – February 2025

National Goat Yoga Month is celebrated in the month of February. Diverse groups of goat-loving yogis will be gathering this month to commemorate the modest origins of the practice of merging goats with exercise. This ever-expanding fitness fad will only continue to develop. Regular yoga is performed in the same manner as goat yoga, with the exception that goats are involved! Some postures require the goats to sit on your back; others require them to just roam about and add more fun to the activity. During some lessons, you can even take short breaks to pet and show love to the young goats.

History of National Goat Yoga Month

April Gould and Sarah Williams started the original Goat Yoga. Goat Yoga began planting seeds in February of 2015 on a little farm in Gilbert Arizona.  Gould was training for a fitness television show, American Ninja Warrior. During her audition process, she was inspired to place a baby goat on her back and do pushups and various yoga poses for added weight, strength, and balance. She was featured and dubbed as the “Goat Whisperer” on the television show for her unique workout style, and using her goats as “training partners.”  Coincidentally, her long time friend Williams owned her own paddleboard yoga business and was wanting to teach something different during the cooler months. Knowing Gould was already famous for working out with her goats, suggested they put the two together and start GOAT YOGA!

In the beginning, it was met with some raised eyebrows, but they believed in themselves and kept thinking of unique ways to keep it going. Gould’s background is in the circus and flying trapeze, so they started dressing her goats in cute tutus and teaching people to do simple acrobatic partner yoga and pyramids while putting goats on their backs. Whether you are there for the yoga and wanting goats to assist you in strength and balance, or whether you are there for the therapeutic benefits of relaxing with baby goats, Goat Yoga is fun for everyone of every age and ability.
