On June 30, 1926, the Central Bank of Guatemala was established to continue the momentum of economic reform. Guatemalans finally enjoyed some financial and economic stability — that is, until the Great Depression. A country that had just got back its bearings suffered severely. It was back to the drawing board as outdated monetary policies crumbled under the weight of a global financial crisis.
Even after the crisis, it was clear that the markets had irreversibly changed, and Guatemala needed to change with it. New considerations emerged, such as liberalization, computers, telecommunications, and synergies between international markets. In 1993, the country officially kickstarted a program to modernize the national financial system. A system that was 40 years in the making finally experienced order and balance for the first time.
