Its vocalist, Deborah Harry, was born on July 1, 1945, in Miami, Florida, and was adopted by Richard and Catherine Harry when she was 3 months old. She grow up in Hawthorne, New Jersey, and sang in the church choir. In the late 1960s, she tried college for two years but she dropped out later and moved to New York City. She also sang with the band Wind in the Willows, worked as a Playboy Bunny, and ended up waiting tables at Max’s Kansas City.

Harry later joined a female trio called the Stilettos and met guitarist Chris Stein, who became a member of the group. Over time, they became romantically involved. In 1974, the two started the band known as Blondie. The band played in many of the legendary clubs in New York, including C.B.G.B. In 1976, Blondie’s self-titled debut was released. The following year, the band released their second album, “Plastic Letters,” which scored a No. 2 spot on the British charts with the single ‘Denis.’

“Parallel Lines,” Blondie’s third album, helped catapult the band to pop music stardom. In 1978, the disco and glam single ‘Heart of Glass’ reached the top of the U.S. charts. Apart from being the lead vocalist for the group, Harry wrote many of its songs with Stein. Harry became a pop music icon with her white-blond hair, high cheekbones, and commanding, cool style partially inspired by comic books and movies.
