History of Singapore Armed Forces Day

There was a time when Singapore was a part of Malaysia. However, the two nations eventually separated, and Singapore came up with its own set of rules, as well as its unique defense system. To ensure that the country never faced a security threat, the Ministry of the Interior and Defense (MID) was formed. The ministry then took charge and formulated the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF). This included a group of individuals who were trained to master their field. In 1966 the Singapore Armed Forces Training Institute (SAFTI) was established to provide the required special training. During this time, the SAF included volunteers, the police, and regiment battalions. By 1967, this stance changed and the new legislation required every 18-year-old male to serve part-time in the armed forces.

The efforts of the Singapore Armed Forces were a success and the British Army fled Singapore in 1971. This convinced the government to further strengthen the impact of the armed forces and SAF experienced an expansion. To further celebrate the success of the armed forces, Singapore Armed Forces Day started being celebrated in 1969.

The purpose behind the day was for the forces to once again pledge their loyalty and dedication to the country. The first grand celebratory day saw 1,500 servicemen in the parade held to mark the day. The commemoration also saw the presentation of the SAF Flag for the first time to the third Battalion by the Minister for Interior and Defense, Mr. Lim Kim San.
