History of Caregiver Appreciation Day

Caregiver Appreciation Day is observed to give recognition to the individuals who provide care services to people who cannot care for themselves. These include the elderly, disabled, and those who are hospitalized or in need of temporary care. On this day, people in the U.S. show their appreciation for these compassionate professionals of whom the vast majority are females.

Oftentimes, caregivers put the needs of their loved ones ahead of their own, which leads to their receiving less help than they need to stay healthy. Yes, most caregivers are overwhelmed with giving care and coordinating care for their loved ones, forgetting about their own health. One thing to note here is that Caregiver Appreciation Day is for caregivers everywhere, paid and unpaid. In fact, unpaid caregivers, such as the ones who typically care for a family member, are usually ignored. It can be a thankless job.

A unique thing about this holiday is that different organizations and employers have different dates to celebrate the occasion. So, there are nearly half-a-dozen Caregiver Appreciation Days out there with different dates. But generally, it is celebrated on either or both of these dates: November 13 and March 3. Some organizations choose November 13 as the desired day to celebrate Caregiver Appreciation Day because November is Caregiver Appreciation Month, while most others stick with March 3.
