History of National OmazingYou Day
Can you believe the world once viewed loving yourself and putting yourself first as the height of selfishness? Every major religion and spiritual culture would advise against loving yourself — but it was allowed if your intentions were pure. Buddhism, Jainism, Yangism, and Confucianism, to name a few, regularly put loving others well above loving oneself. But the world eventually began to change its thoughts on this topic. Various movements and a growing awareness of individual rights have led to a growing realization of one’s worth.
The two World Wars, especially the second, and the ongoing Vietnam crisis led many Western cultures to advocate for peace and love among people. The world after the war was vulnerable but more aware than ever before of how fragile life really is. Harmony and love were the prevailing hope of the times across many countries, especially in the U.S., U.K., and Australia. The new generation of the 1950s and ‘60s were more empathetic, dedicated, and self-aware than their older generations.
Another turn towards self-love came with the second wave of the feminist movement. Alongside advocating for women’s rights, activists also began to promote the self-worth concept. They believed every woman must recognize her own value first, and only then can she accept and love herself enough to stand up for her rights.
The Black-Power Movement in the 1970s had an additional, very positive influence on the concept of self-love and worth. The main slogan — “Black is Power” — was a powerful message for people to embrace their real selves.
The self-love concept was founded on the back of these movements, and social media has only increased the spotlight on this topic. Today, people are more open to being true to themselves, throwing off the stigma of asking for help, and are getting better at embracing the good while facing down the bad. We’re learning how to put our well-being first.
