Kyrgyzstan Independence Day is celebrated on August 31 of every year. As a national holiday in Kyrgyzstan, it is one of the most important dates in the calendar, and a commemoration of the founding of the Republic of Kyrgyzstan after the implosion of the U.S.S.R.

From gorgeous snow mountains to wild pastures inhabited by semi-nomads, Kyrgyzstan is one of the most beautiful countries. Its rich history, parts of which are still preserved, and beautiful wildlife make it one of the best-hidden gems in the world.

History of Kyrgyzstan Independence Day

Kyrgyzstan is a landlocked country in Central Asia. Its landscape consists mainly of mountainous regions, and the country has been at the crossroads of many civilizations and cultures. Throughout its history, nomadic tribes, some even to this day, have long inhabited the area known today as Kyrgyzstan. The rich history of this country can be seen in its many historical sites, three of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

One of the earliest unified Kyrgyz states in history saw its peak around 840 A.D. The Kyrgyz people maintained dominion over the mountain regions of Central Asia for about two centuries afterward. As of the 12th century, the Kyrgyz people began migrating south, to avoid conflict during the expansion of the Mongol Empire.

In the late 19th century, parts of modern-day Kyrgyzstan were being ceded to the Russian empire. This had prompted many of the Kyrgyz people to revolt. The 1916 rebellion against Russian rule is one of the most significant moments in the history of the Kyrgyz people.

For most of the 20th century, Kyrgyzstan was under Soviet rule. Nonetheless, the country had undergone development during this period. Besides educational systems, infrastructure and literacy, this was also the period when a distinct Kyrgyz national identity began developing.

The fall of the Soviet Union in 1991 is also the period when most former Soviet republics began declaring independence. Similarly, the Republic of Kyrgyzstan declared independence the same year. In 2005, however, a revolution took place in the country, issuing other changes in governance and policy.
