Most importantly, employers must keep in mind that both physical and mental health can have an impact on the performance of workers. Hence, to have a long-lasting workforce that can produce quality work, employers must show that they care. History of Companies That Care Day

Companies That Care Day is a national holiday created by the Center for Companies That Care. This is “a 501 national, nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the well-being of employees and the community by educating and inspiring people.” Based on the guidelines of how the day is supposed to be celebrated, the Center for Companies That Care motivates employers to be socially responsible. Businesses are also pushed to incorporate the 10 Characteristics of Socially Responsible Employers into their day-to-day business. This includes valuing and respecting employees, and creating an environment that pushes workers to thrive and grow.

The essence of the day and the goal it aims to achieve lies in labor laws that were created to protect all employees. In fact, labor laws have existed in different forms throughout the centuries. According to Asian scholars, some forms of labor laws existed even in the Babylonian Code of Hammurabi, in the 18th century B.C. But the labor laws of today did not come into being until the industrial revolution. This is because during this time, laborers were overworked, underpaid, exploited, and their lives were often put at risk during the job. Among the most dangerous of these jobs was mining.

Today, workers’ rights include basic human rights, where all categories of workers — whether literate or illiterate — are protected against discrimination. Rights at a workplace now include the provision of health and safety, the right to privacy at work, and improved relations with employers. Workers’ rights on an international level are laid out in the Universal Declaration on Human Rights and the International Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights.
