Background
Born Kwon Bo-ah in the Gyeonggi Province of Guri, South Korea, BoA is perhaps one of the most popular female celebrities in Korea. However, she didn’t get her fame and achievements on a golden platter.
BoA’s career began in 1998 when she accompanied her elder brother on a talent search organized by the giant Korean entertainment company, S.M. Entertainment. The talent hunt agents discovered and offered to train her. And although her parents were against the idea of their child abandoning her studies to chase an uncertain dream, they later conceded to her elder brother’s persuasion. BoA was trained for two years until 2000 when she released her debut album, “ID; Peace B.” To further extend her reach outside Korea, BoA shifted her career to Japan and in 2000, released her first Japanese album, “Listen To My Heart.” Her Japanese release made her the first Korean pop star to become famous in Japan after the embargo on the exchange of entertainment was lifted between the two countries. In 2008, she crossed the ocean to make her American debut.
She revealed she is a huge fan of Michael Jackson, Justin Timberlake, Whitney Houston, and Ne-Yo, which might explain why most of her songs are in the RnB genre. Additionally, she has also disclosed that her early influence as a singer was Seo Taiji, popularly called King of The Culture, who also dropped out of school to chase his musical dream. Besides her musical career, BoA has also hosted several shows and starred in several movies. In 2013, she had a major role in the Hollywood dance movie, “Make Your Move 3D.”
