History of National Anytime Hawaiian Day

Before delving into the history of this holiday, you should know that it’s not the same as National Hawaiian Day observed on July 5. There is no evidence as to how this day came into being. It is an informal way of introducing Hawaiian culture and traditions to the world. On this day, people honor the heritage of Hawaii by preparing or tasting local dishes, dressing in traditional attire, performing Hawaiian music, and making merry in general.

There are no rules to celebrate this fun holiday. You can observe in your own way, like inviting your Hawaiian colleagues or friends for a traditional dinner. Most of us know Hawaii as a tourist destination but might not be aware of its history. You can peek into a history book and learn more about this neighboring state to pay tribute to the holiday. Until 1893, Hawaii was a glorious kingdom under the rule of Queen Liliʻuokalani of the Kalākaua Dynasty. She was the last monarch of the island who was overthrown by the pro-United States.

Hawaii is the newest state of the American continent, attaining its statehood only in 1959. Prior to that, Hawaii was a republic, with Sanford B. Dole as its first president. Most members of the U.S. Congress were against the idea of annexing the island. However, they soon realized its strategic importance after Pearl Harbor was used as the naval force during the Spanish-American war. Not to mention the Japanese aerial strike on the base during World War II. These incidents established Hawaii as a part of the national identity of America.

Steeped in a melange of folk legends and tropical modernism, Hawaii certainly deserves a day to commemorate its age-old customs and traditions.
