Mizoram State Day is on February 20. The day marks the formation of Mizoram as a state.
The region is a state in north-eastern India and shares a border with countries like Bangladesh and Myanmar. Are you wondering why this particular name was chosen for the state? Well, it’s because the inhabitants of the region are called Mizo. Based on the history, the British were particularly interested in the region’s resources such as tea and milk when they took over India. Hence, the state was officially formulated once India gained independence. To honor the day and the struggle of the residents, start celebrating now!
History of Mizoram State Day
Before Mizoram was declared a state, tribes from north Eastern India resided in this region. The origins of the tribes are still however a bit mysterious. According to historical records, the tribes migrated to India from China during the Mongoloid wave. Some also believe that the tribes emerged from the Shinlung or Chhinlung San, two areas located on the banks of the Yalung River in China. But the story gets even more complicated!
Although the people are called Mizos today, the first group of immigrants was formerly known as ‘Kukis.’ The second batch of people moving to India then came to be known as ‘New Kukis,’ while the last were referred to as ‘Lushais.’ During the 18th and 19th centuries, several tribe raids took place as the Mizo Hills were also declared under the ruling of the British in 1895. In 1935, a proclamation had left the districts of Lushai Hills and Assam to be regarded as an Excluded Area.
The Mizos despised the British ruling and therefore a political awakening had been evoked. As a result of the awakening, the first Mizo political party came into existence. On April 9, 1946, The Mizo Common People’s Union was born — later on, renamed as Mizo Union (MU). Although the party did bring about some change, the Mizos were never fully satisfied with the outcome as the British were still in major control. It was only when the British left India in 1947 that the Mizos were free.
