History of Toronto International Film Festival
The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) is one of the most important film festivals in the entertainment world. Looking at its history, it started as the Toronto Festival of Festivals, organized by Bill Marshall and Henk Van Der Kolk. The first edition was in 1976 and consisted of multiple screenings, showcasing some of the most innovative movies from other film festivals held during the same year. The festival quickly became one of the most attended events by eager audiences in Toronto.
Two years after its founding, the festival took on its current name that we know and love. During the 1980s, the festival’s programming and associated events grew, with additional galas every night of the festival. Although this fixture initially focused on Canadian cinema, it has since developed a more international focus. As of now, the Toronto International Film Festival is a reference for international cinema. During the 1990s, the festival enjoyed particular popularity, becoming one of the most respected film festivals. It gained as much significance as other renowned festivals, namely the Cannes Film Festival.
The festival is now renowned for featuring a large number of films in every yearly edition, as well as for providing a platform for directors and industry professionals from around the world to showcase their work and engage with international audiences. This festival has also gone through various organizational changes. In 2013, Cameron Bailey became the festival’s creative director and one of the major supervisors of TIFF Bell Lightbox’s year-round programming.
