The Death of Prophet Muhammad occurs annually on the 28th day of the Islamic month of Safar and this year, that falls on September 2. History of Death of Prophet Muhammad
The Prophet Muhammad is the founder of Islam and the proclaimer of the “Quran.” It is said that he was born in 570 A.D. in Mecca and died on June 8, 632 A.D. in Medina. The cause of death is not recorded but it is assumed it was due to fever.
He was born into the Quraish tribe in Mecca. They were successful merchants and controlled the trade routes along the west coast of Arabia, north to Syria, and south to Yemen. He worked for several years as a merchant before being hired by Khadija, a wealthy widow whom he eventually married. When he was around 40 years old he began having visions and hearing voices. Whilst meditating on Mount Hira, near Mecca the Archangel Gabriel appeared to him and instructed him to recite “in the name of [your] lord.” This was the start of the series of revelations that formed the basis of the holy book of Islam — the “Quran.”
His revelations and teachings of a single god angered many of the Meccan merchants. His position within the tribe was unstable and in 622 A.D., he headed to Medina. He continued to teach his revelations and built a community of followers. They continued to clash with the Quraish tribe until eventually Mecca surrendered and Muhammad took over the city.
Before his death, he had not named a successor. This led to the emergence of the Shi’a and Sunni sects of Islam. The Shi’a believed that only those with a direct lineage to the Prophet could guide the Muslim community, and the Sunnis believed that the Prophet’s successor should be determined by consensus. The Sunni and Shi’a branches still remain divided within Islam.
