Background

Tiffany Sara Cornilia Haddish was born on December 3, 1979, in South Central Los Angeles, California. Her parents were Tsihaye Reda Haddish and Leola. Her father left when she was a baby and her mother remarried the father to Haddish’s two half-sisters and two half-brothers. Haddish became the sole caregiver of the family after her mother suffered acute brain damage in a car accident, which resulted in her becoming schizophrenic. During this period, she realized her talent for making people laugh. She was registered into foster care together with her siblings when she was 13. To cope with the unfamiliarities in life, she turned to comedy. At 15 she was reunited with her siblings when their grandmother took them in. She went to George Hale Middle School and later graduated from El Camino Real High School.

While in school, she took part in drama competitions, presented Shakespearian monologues, and won several awards. This was despite her struggles with academics. After graduating from high school, she had no place to go and she lived in her car for some time. In 1997, an ultimatum given to her by her social worker landed her in Laugh Factory Comedy Camp. The mentoring she got from there fanned her passion for comedy and this realization changed her life for the better. She later enrolled at Santa Monica College after being unable to attend New York University due to tuition expenses.

Her first rise to prominence was through a spot on the comedy competition “Bill Bellamy’s Who’s Got Jokes.” In 2013, she featured on “Real Husbands of Hollywood” in a recurring role, and in the following year, she was cast in “If Loving You Is Wrong,” an Oprah Winfrey Network drama series. Her reputation grew when she appeared on “The Carmichael Show” sitcom as “Nekeisha.” Her role in “Girls Trip” however, was what gave her a big break in the entertainment industry in 2017. The role brought her numerous nominations and accolades. Haddish also received a Primetime Emmy Award for hosting a Saturday Night Live episode. She has also published a memoir titled “The Last Black Unicorn.” In 2018, she was featured in “The Last O.G.,” a T.B.S. series. She was an executive producer in the Netflix/Adult Swim animation “Tuca & Bertie” in 2019 and voiced the character “Tuca.”
