Background

Broderick Stephen Harvey, Sr. is a celebrated name in Hollywood. His huge smile, wise anecdotes, eccentric style, and playful personality have endeared him to viewers and fans worldwide. Harvey has had a series of controversies in his career. However, his never-say-die attitude has made him a revered figure and a powerful role model across different demographics. On January 17, 1957, Harvey was born in Welch, West Virginia, to his coal miner father, Jesse Harvey, and Eloise Vera. He’s a Capricorn and of African-American descent; however, growing up was particularly difficult for Harvey due to his chronic stuttering problem. Harvey eventually overcame this problem which would’ve impeded his comedy career. On October 8, 1985, Harvey debuted his first performance as a stand-up comedian in Cleveland, Ohio.

The early stage of his comedy career was trying. Harvey was homeless for three years, slept in his car, and showered at pools and gas stations. This experience fortified his character and molded him into the charitable person he is today. Harvey’s first breakthrough in stand-up comedy was in April 1990 when he became a finalist in “Johnie Walker’s National Comedy Search.” It led to a long gig as the host of “Showtime at the Apollo.” Harvey starred in “Me and the Boys” (1994) before hosting “The Steve Harvey Show” from 1996—2002. He continued his work in stand-up and film, appearing in “The Fighting Temptations” and “Love Don’t Cost a Thing” (2003), “You Got Served,” (2005), and several others. After releasing his “New York Times” bestseller “Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man” in 2009, Harvey assumed the “Family Feud” position in September 2010.

Harvey’s career has been very progressive. From stand-up comedy to hosting game shows, appearing in movies, to authoring books, he’s had a whole career, and he’s not done yet. Harvey is presently the host of a new show, “Judge Steve Harvey,” that started airing on January 4, 2022. Harvey shares his success with his blended family. He’s been married three times and has seven children, three of which he adopted from his current marriage with Majorie Bridges.
