She was born in Livingston, New Jersey, and is the daughter of Rita Stoecker and Seymour Handler, who had separate religions. Her mother was a Mormon, and her father, a Jew. Unfortunately, during her childhood, her mother got diagnosed with breast cancer and her brother died when she was nine.
Handler moved to her aunt’s house in Los Angeles at the age of 19 and decided to pursue a career in stand-up at 21. Her first television appearance was as a cast member of the T.V. series “Girls Behaving Badly.” The show aired for three years. Handler then got a job at “E!” and was a commentator on “Scarborough Country.” She hosted “On the Lot” and was a “The Tonight Show” correspondent before she began hosting her eponymous show, “The Chelsea Handler Show,” in April 2006. Since then, Handler has done multiple shows. After multiple comedic T.V. and stand-up shows, including “Chelsea Lately,” Handler hosted the 2010 M.T.V. Video Music Awards. In 2016, Handler filmed a Netflix documentary series called “Chelsea Does.”
Aside from television, Handler has produced a myriad of shows from “Pretty Wild” to “Hello Ross,” “The Josh Wolf Show,” “Marvel’s Tigra & Dazzler Show,” and many others. She’s a bestselling author who has written six books that made it into the New York Times Best Seller List.
