James Andrew Eric Phelps, known simply as James Phelps, was born in the Birmingham suburb of Sutton Coldfield, England, on February 25, 1986, 13 minutes after his brother Oliver Phelps. Susan and Martyn Phelps have no other children. Phelps and his brother went to Little Sutton Primary School and Arthur Terry Secondary School when they were younger. The twins were schooled on set while filming the “Harry Potter” series.

The twins skipped school in 2000 to attend an open audition in Leeds, despite having no prior acting experience. They were cast as Fred and George Weasley in “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” after about six auditions. After being cast, Phelps was assigned the character of Fred and Oliver was given the role of George at the first table reading. He worked as a runner on the sets of “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” and “The Da Vinci Code” in addition to acting. Phelps appeared as a guest star in an episode of the British drama “Silent Witness,” which aired on January 6, 2015. He also served as an associate producer on the fantasy film “Cadia: The World Within,” in which he acted in 2019.
