Background

Sean Duval Price, or Sean Price, was an American rapper and a member of the hip-hop groups Heltah Skeltah, Boot Camp Clik, and Random Axe. He was born on March 17, 1972, in Brownsville, New York, U.S. Price grew up in Brooklyn and converted to Islam in 2009. As a member of Boot Camp Clik, he first appeared on Smif-N-Wessun’s 1995 album, “Dah Shinin.” In 1996, he rose to prominence as ‘Ruck,’ a member of Heltah Skeltah alongside fellow rapper, Rock. They released their debut album “Nocturnal” on Duck Down Records. After this, they released two more albums: “Magnum Force” and “DIRT.”

Price then rebranded himself under his birth name when he went solo and released three studio albums: “Monkey Barz,” 2005; “Jesus Price Superstar,” 2007; and “Mic Tyson,” 2010. He soon became a major player in the underground hip-hop community. In his first album, he describes the life and times of a volatile rap star on the verge of obscurity, yet trying to leave no stone unturned to find success. In 2005, he won an independent album on both Source and AllHipHop.com, the two influential websites. In 2011, he appeared as a judge on the T.V. show, “Ultimate M.C.” In this same year, he formed the group, Random Axe, with Guilty Simpson and producer Black Milk.

Unfortunately, on August 8, 2015, Price died in his sleep. He was 43 years old, and he was survived by his wife and three kids. His posthumous mixtape, ‘Songs in the Key of Price’ climbed the Billboard charts a month later. Two years after his death, his number ‘Imperius Rex’ was released featuring guest appearances from DOOM, Prodigy, and several others.
