Background

Claire Elise Boucher, known around the world as Grimes, is a famous musician, singer, songwriter, and record producer. She has used different elements of many musical styles, making her tunes pleasing to listen to. Boucher was born on March 17, 1988, in Vancouver, Canada. She is the daughter of Sandy Garossino and Maurice Boucher.

In 2007, she started writing music under the name Boucher. Three years later, she released her first two albums, “Geidi Primes” (2010) and “Halfaxa” (2010). The former was a concept album inspired by the novel series “Dune.” After releasing her second album, she began music tours outside Montreal. In 2011, she released five songs on a 12-inch gramophone vinyl, splitting the disc with Chris d’Eon. The collaboration was named “Darkbloom.” After her first two albums and “Darkbloom” got positive reviews, Boucher signed with the record label 4AD in 2012. She soon released her third studio album, “Visions” (2012). It was in the “N.M.E.” ‘500 Greatest Albums of All Time’ list in 2013 and won the Electronic Album of the Year at the Juno Awards. Boucher also won the Artist of the Year award at the 2013 Webby Awards. ‘Oblivion’, a single from the album, got critical praise and was later made into a music video. Boucher released a single, ‘Go,’ in 2014, featuring Blood Diamonds. It was number 14 in “Rolling Stone’s” ‘Best Songs of the Year.’ A year later, she released a video for the demo version of the song ‘Realiti.’ It was well-received by critics and was called the “best new Grimes song since Visions.” Boucher released the first single from her fourth album, ‘Flesh Without Blood,’ before releasing the album itself, “Art Angels,” in November 2015. She released music videos for most singles on the album and later released the song ‘Medieval Warfare,’ which was part of the soundtrack for “Suicide Squad” (2016). She later starred in a futuristic music video for the song, ‘Venus Fly,’ along with rapper Janelle Monáe. It earned Boucher the Best Dance Video at the Much Music Video Awards. The singer took a short hiatus in 2018, during which she appeared in other artists’ music videos but didn’t release any of her own. In June 2019, she released ‘My Name is Dark’, one of the songs from her upcoming album. Boucher revealed previews of other songs from the collection before releasing the album “Miss Anthropocene” (2020). She was the judge on the reality show “Alter Ego” in 2021 and later revealed the name of her upcoming album, “Book 1.”

Boucher was in a relationship with singer Devon Welsh from 2007 to 2010 and then with musician Jaime Brooks for six years. She began dating technology giant Elon Musk in 2018, and in 2020, they had their first child, a son. They “semi-split” in 2021 and welcomed their second child together later that year. Apparently, as of 2022, they have broken up for good. Boucher has designed all five of her album covers, the art deeply influenced by Japanese Mangas and comic book artists.
