He moved from his native Los Angeles to South Korea to start his career since he had always wanted to be a singer. Being an only child, he was raised with love and affection. As a little child, he frequently attended church and sang in the choir. Around this time, he realized what he wanted to achieve in life. He started singing in the church’s Praise Team and joined the choir. Hong started getting compliments for his soulful performances because people appreciated his voice. After completing high school, he trained in Seoul with his members for two years and two months before their 2015 debut.

Hong’s professional career began when he was chosen to join the boy band Seventeen as a part of the vocal section. He debuted in the show’s online broadcasts in 2013, along with the other 12 contestants. The group debuted on MBC on May 26, 2015, with an hour-long special presentation. They released their second EP, Boys Be, on September 10, 2015, and it quickly rose to the top of sales charts, garnering numerous awards. Their fame grew in 2016 with the release of their first full-length album, Love & Letter. After their 2019 album You Made My Dawn was released, Hong and his group experienced tremendous K-Pop popularity. The album’s lead single, Home, is their most well-liked release.
