Background

Amy Grant was born on November 25, 1960 in Augusta, Georgia. She is an American singer best known for her work in the Christian rock genre. Her family relocated to Nashville, Tennessee when she was a young girl. She wrote her first song ‘Mountain Top’ in 1976 and sang the song at her school — her first public performance. The following year, she was offered a recording contract at World Records after her church youth group leader played the song before the label’s owner, Chris Christian. Her debut album was released in 1978.

During the mid-1980s, she successfully made the transition from contemporary Christian music to mainstream pop music. In 1986, her duet with Peter Cetera (lead vocalist of the rock band Chicago) entitled ‘The Next Time I Fall’ reached the top spot on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart. Five years later, she revisited her Christian music roots, recording the album “Heart in Motion” which topped Billboard’s Christian album chart for 32 consecutive weeks.

In 2001, Grant received a Song of the Century award from the Recording Industry Association of America (R.I.A.A.) for her 1982 song ‘El Shaddai.’ Grant was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame by the Gospel Music Association two years later. In 2006, Grant received a star on the prestigious Hollywood Walk of Fame. She released her semi-autobiography entitled “Mosaic: Pieces of My Life So Far” the following year. Grant continued to record and release songs and albums in the late 2000s and throughout the 2010s.
