Tea for Two Tuesday is celebrated every year on the third Tuesday of March and this year, it falls on March 19. As the name suggests, Tea for Two Tuesday is for two or more people to enjoy a cup of tea together. Tea is a very relaxing beverage and becomes more pleasant when it is enjoyed with others. Along with the health benefits of tea, you also get to enjoy the company of your friends and let your hair down. The day can be celebrated by anyone who likes a good, hot cup of tea and doesn’t mind sharing it with others. After all, the more, the merrier.

History of Tea for Two Tuesday

It’s relatively common knowledge that the Chinese discovered the miraculous beverage of tea. However, it was a Portuguese woman named Catherine of Braganza who popularized the beverage in England. In 1662, Catherine married King Charles II and her dowry included several crates of loose leaf tea! She continued drinking it every day in England and the royal court quickly adopted the beverage. The aristocrats especially warmed up to the drink! Tea soon became a drink and a meal. During the late 1840s, the Duchess of Bedford, Anna Russell, introduced afternoon tea because she became so hungry between the two daily meals at the time. And, of course, she shared this new tradition with friends.

Many varieties of tea exist around the world. Green tea is popular in countries like China and Japan. South Asian countries prefer their ‘chai’ with spices, boiled in both milk and water. There is even a pink tea, commonly known as ‘Kashmiri tea,’ served in many parts of the Himalayan regions of Pakistan and Afghanistan during the winter months at weddings. Tibetans are known for adding butter and salt to their teas. In the U.K., they serve a variety of black tea with boiling water and a dash of milk.

The poet William Ewart Gladstone famously wrote, “If you are cold, tea will warm you; If you are too heated, it will cool you; If you are depressed, it will cheer you; If you are excited, it will calm you.” Tea for Two Tuesday celebrates one of the world’s favorite drinks and friendship, which are both an integral part of our daily lives.
