The SKI Citrus Soda was introduced by the Double Cola Company on August 10, 1956, in Chattanooga, Tennessee. After a series of experiments, the team finally hit the nail on the head with the perfect mix of orange and lemon flavor. Two years later, SKI was finally registered and the product was launched in the market in the summer of 1958. The origin of the name was conceptualized by employee Dot Myers, who suggested the names ‘Ski’ and ‘Skee’ after being inspired by a ski trip she had in Chickamauga lake. It proved to be a mega-hit.
The soda was bottled in multiple bottling facilities in many different states, including Alaska, Alabama, Georgia, Indiana, California, Missouri, North Carolina, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Utah, Ohio, Virginia, and West Virginia. The flavor was immediately embraced by the public for its authentic citrus flavor and refreshing quench.
By 1962, Fairmont Foods purchased Double Cola Company, which made SKI adapt to different changes in packaging. They now incorporate the blue color with the slogan “The Perfect Beverage” and “Summertime, Springtime, Wintertime, Anytime.”
The National SKI Citrus Day holiday was officially launched by the Double Cola Company in September 2020. Its mission is to celebrate the 62 years of the citrus-cola flavor, as well as highlight the loyal customers who have been there with them every step of the way.
