History of Duran Duran Appreciation Day
The idea for Duran Duran Appreciation Day came from a radio D.J. in Michigan. Fans of the band around the world have adopted the day and celebrate it every year. In 1978, Nick Rhodes and John Taylor founded Duran Duran in the U.K. It is widely regarded as one of the most successful bands of the 1980s. They were the house band at the Rum Runner nightclub in Birmingham. At the time, Nick Rhodes was a DJ at the club. The first singer to join the band was Stephen Duffy. Simon Colley, the band’s original bass player, joined shortly after. Throughout its existence, the band underwent several transformations.
On June 15, 1981, Duran Duran released their first album. The album was a success, lasting 118 weeks on the Billboard Top 100 chart. By the end of 1982, the album had been certified platinum. The record was split into two sides, with five tracks on one side and four on the other. The album’s songs quickly became household favorites. ‘Careless Memories,’ ‘Planet Earth,’ and ‘Girls on Film’ are just a few of the songs from the album. In 1981, the band embarked on its first tour — ‘Faster Than Light Tour.’ Several trips followed over the next 40 years.
Duran Duran released a total of 15 studio albums over their career. “Rio,” released in 1982, and “Liberty,” released in 1990, are two of the most successful albums. “Paper Gods,” released in 2015 is another Duran Duran album that was well-received.
