History of L. Ron Hubbard Day

Lafayette Ronald Hubbard was an American science-fiction and fantasy writer who founded the Church of Scientology. He catapulted the growth of his church into a worldwide organization. Even though Hubbard was best known for his fantasy and science-fiction stories, he wrote books in other genres as well, such as adventure fiction, aviation, travel, mysteries, and even romance.

Hubbard introduced Dianetics to the world in the 1950s and described it as “the hidden source of all psychosomatic ills and human aberration.” He asserted that “skills have been developed for their invariable cure.” Dianetics was duly introduced in the May 1950 issue of Astounding. Hubbard abandoned freelance writing, began promoting Dianetics — writing several books about it in the next decade — and found Dianetics research organizations. Later, he expanded the foundations of Dianetics to construct a spiritually oriented (although non-religious at the time) doctrine based on the concept that the human self is a ‘thetan,’ an ‘immortal, omniscient, and potentially omnipotent entity.’ Hubbard taught that after the ‘thetans’ created the material universe, they forgot their godlike powers and fell into the trap of physical bodies. Scientology aimed to “rehabilitate” each person’s ‘thetan’ to restore its original abilities and help it become “active” again.

In honor of the centennial birth of the Founder of Dianetics and Scientology, L. Ron Hubbard, Inglewood, California, has declared March 13 as L. Ron Hubbard Day. On March 8, Ralph Franklin, a member of the Inglewood City Council, presented a special tribute to the Church of Scientology in Inglewood at City Hall.
