Born to activist Meer Taj Mohammed and Lateef Fatima on November 2, 1965, in New Delhi, Khan dreamed of being a professional sportsman. His zodiac sign is Scorpio, and he is Muslim. He became interested in acting as a youngster, performing in stage plays.
A student of the National Drama School in India and with the tutelage of theatre director Barry John, Khan, honed his craft. He made his acting debut in film and television in the late 1980s with roles in the series “Dil Dariya,” “Fauji,” and “In Which Annie Gives It Those Ones.”
Khan moved to Mumbai in 1991 to kickstart his Bollywood career. From then until 2001, the actor was known for his charismatic turns as villains, anti-heroes, and romantic leads in high-grossing films, including “Baazigar,” “Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa,” “Yes Boss” and “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.”
A spinal injury while on a movie set in 2001 nearly cost him his career. In 2003, Khan had surgery to correct his injury and took on fewer roles. In 2004, he bought and rebranded the production company Dreamz Unlimited into Red Chillies Entertainment. Films produced by his company include “Main Hoon Na.”
By 2010, Khan was ready to crossover into Hollywood. His star turn in the film “My Name is Khan” is about a Muslim man on the Asperger’s Spectrum who journeys to meet the president of the United States of America after the 9/11 attacks and is met with critical acclaim.
Passionate about women and children’s rights, the actor was honored with UNESCO’s Pyramide con Marni award in 2011 for supporting children’s education and the World Economic Forum’s Crystal Award in 2018.
He holds three doctorate degrees and owns the Indian Premier League cricket team Kolkata Knight Riders and the Caribbean Premier League team Trinbago Knight Riders.
In 2022, Khan is being kept busy by starring in two upcoming films, “Pathaan” and “Dunki.” These films are scheduled for release in 2023.
