Background
David After Dentist is an Internet phenomenon that captured people’s attention when David DeVore Jr.’s father posted a video on the Internet of his reaction to anesthesia after his oral surgery.
In May 2008, 7-year-old David DeVore Jr. was taken to the dentist to have his extra tooth extracted. Since this was David’s first surgery and his mother could not be there, his father decided to videotape the experience to share with their family. The entire video takes place in the car after David’s dentist appointment. After his father asked him about how he felt, David replied that he didn’t have any pain and it felt good. After the surgery, David was feeling confused by the after-effects of the anesthesia given to him. While in the car, he asked his dad questions like “Is this real life?” and “Is this going to be forever?” David also told his dad that he believed he had two fingers. At one point he even attempted to push himself up from his seat and began screaming before getting exhausted.
Seven months later, David’s dad posted the video on Facebook. Being overwhelmed with people wanting to see the video, he decided to upload it to YouTube as well. David’s family was soon made YouTube Partners, which gave YouTube the right to run ads over the videos they post, and in exchange, they are given a share of the revenue earned. In May 2021, the DeVore family held an auction for a “David After Dentist” NFT, with the profits going toward David and his brother’s college tuition. The NFT sold for around $13,500.
