Armenia Constitution Day – July 5, 2025

Armenia Constitution Day is celebrated annually on July 5. It is a public holiday that honors the memory of the adoption of its post-Soviet Constitution and marks the creation of a new state structure and the beginning of a new stage in the life of the country. On this day, Armenia and its citizens take a break from work, school, or university, as it is considered an official national holiday.

Armenia Constitution Day is observed throughout the country with various ceremonies, speeches, and entertainment events. Not only Armenian citizens but also representatives of other states and nations can join the celebration.

History of Armenia Constitution Day

In 1990, Armenia declared its independence from the Soviet Union, and it worked on a draft constitution and revised the first until 1993. The opposition party was against the draft, and it was not until 1995 that a Constitution was adopted. The ongoing war in Nagorno-Karabakh over differences over border areas with neighboring Azerbaijan had also delayed the adoption of Armenia’s constitution.

Thus, the Constitution of Armenia was adopted in a popular Armenian referendum on July 5, 1995. Yerevan was recognized as the capital of the state. As for power, it belongs to its citizens, who exercise it directly through the election of government representatives. Decisions related to the change of the constitutional status or the change of borders are subject to voting by the citizens of Armenia in a referendum.

According to the November 2005 constitution, the President of the Republic appoints the Prime Minister based on the distribution of seats in the National Assembly and consultations with parliamentary factions. The president also appoints (or dismisses) members of the government on the recommendation of the Prime Minister. Armenia can be seen as a semi-presidential republic, given the constitutional powers of the president.

The Constitution Day of Armenia is celebrated simultaneously with the Day of State Symbols — Flag, Emblem, and Anthem. The Armenian flag has three equal horizontal stripes: the upper red stripe, the middle blue, and the lower orange stripe. The official version of the definition of colors is set out in the Constitution of the Republic of Armenia. It says that red symbolizes the Armenian Highlands and the struggle of people for survival, blue represents the will of the Armenian people to live in peace, and orange indicates the creative talent and diligence of the Armenians.
