The game was initially known as “Word-cross.” The new name is a result of a typo error when it was first published in the New York World.

Arthur Wynne is usually credited with the discovery of the game. But the earliest form of the game did not have black squares. They were also played on a diamond-shaped grid. The game has received massive popularity. The rules have small differences in both the U.S. and the U.K. The British puzzle is generally considered more difficult.
