Tajikistan National Unity Day is celebrated on June 27 every year in Tajikistan. On this day 23 years ago, President Emomali Rahmon of Tajikistan signed the General Agreement on Peace and National Consent, putting an end to the country’s five-year civil war. Tajikistan, which dates back to the Samanid Empire, was proclaimed a component republic of the Soviet Union and remained such until the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991.
History of Tajikistan Unity Day
By the mid-19th century, Russian conquests in Central Asia had brought most of modern-day Tajikistan under Tsarist authority. In 1924, Tajikistan was unified into a newly constituted Tajik Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, which remained administratively part of the Uzbek S.S.R. until 1929, when the Tajik A.S.S.R. gained the Khujand region. Throughout the Soviet period, Tajiks maintained a fierce feeling of nationalism and pride in their own history and culture during the Soviet period, despite the Soviet Union’s efforts to create a Soviet communal culture.
The Supreme Soviet declared Tajikistan’s independence from the Soviet Union on September 9, 1991, following the collapse of the Soviet Union. Tajikistan was thrown into a civil war after the dissolution of the Soviet Union due to ethnic tensions. Rebels from the Garm and Gorno-Badakhshan regions rose against President Rahmon Nabiyev’s newly formed government, which was dominated by Khujand and Kulyab inhabitants in a regional war.
During the five-year battle, about 100,000 people died in the fighting, with roughly 10% of the population fleeing the country as refugees. After both sides established a military standstill, the war was concluded in 1997 by a U.N-sponsored armistice. The war officially ended on June 27, 1997, when the General Agreement for the Establishment of Peace and National Accord in Tajikistan and the Moscow Protocol were signed.
