International Olympic Day was established by the International Olympic Committee in 1948 to mark June 23, 1894, when Pierre de Coubertin founded the IOC in Paris — celebrated with sporting events and outreach programs in more than 160 countries. International Widows’ Day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 2010 to draw attention to the more than 259 million widows worldwide, many of whom face legal, financial, and social discrimination that strips them of property, inheritance, and civic rights.
