Background

Meghan Trainor was born in Nantucket, Massachusetts on December 22, 1993, to parents Kelly Anne and Gary Trainor. Trainor was born into a musical family, with her father being a music teacher and musician. She has accompanied her father to the local church since she was six years old. Trainor started writing music and pursuing a career as a recording artist at the age of 11. She decided to explore various styles of music and instruments including piano, guitar, and bongo drum after being encouraged by her father. When she was 12, she joined the band Island Fusion, which also included her aunt, brother, and father. The band played covers, soca music, and Trainor’s originals. She wrote her first original song when she was 13 years old. Around the same time, the family relocated to North Eastham, Massachusetts. Trainor attended Nauset Regional High School, where she started studying guitar and served as a substitute cheerleader. She even spent three years singing and playing trumpet in a jazz band. She used Logic Studio to record and produce her compositions until her home studio was ready.

Trainor’s professional career began in 2009 with the release of her self-titled debut album. Local radio stations gave the album a lot of airplay. She received offers including a full scholarship to Berklee College of Music, which she turned down to sign a publishing deal with Big Yellow Dog Music. She began as a songwriter-for-hire before transitioning to song publishing. Because her job required her to travel, she eventually relocated to Nashville, where she met Kevin Kadish. The duo shared a passion for retro music, and they wrote the song ‘All About That Bass’ in 2013. Trainor decided to record the song herself after a string of rejections. The song was released in June 2014 and quickly became a hit, reaching number one in 58 countries and becoming one of the best-selling singles of all time. ‘All About That Bass’ was certified six times platinum and sold over six million copies worldwide. Trainor won the Grammy Award for Best New Artist in 2016.

Trainor also dabbled in T.V. work as she became more popular in the music scene. She was a judge in Fox’s “The Four: Battle for Stardom” in December 2017, alongside Sean Combs, DJ Khaled, and Charlie Walk, and served as a coach in the U.K. edition of “The Voice” in 2020. Trainor competed against singer Shania Twain in a January 2018 episode of TBS’s “Drop the Mic,” where both were declared winners. She likewise lent her voice to the animated films “Smurfs: The Lost Village” and “Playmobil: The Movie.” Soon, fans will see her act in a comedy series after signing an overall deal with NBCUniversal in March 2021.
