Background
D.J. Envy, real name RaaShaun Casey, was born on September 3, 1977, in Queens, New York. He fell in love with disc jockeying in his teens and, by the mid-1990s, was a part of the mixtape circuit. Casey went by the name D.J. Shrimp, working his way up the ranks by performing at concerts and clubs throughout New York. In 2003 he released “The Desert Storm Mixtape: D.J. Envy-Block Party, Vol. 1,” which made it to number 57 on the “Billboard Top 200.” The commercial success of the mixtape expanded his reach, and he got to mix songs once a month for Hot 97 radio’s “Takin’ It to the Streets” show. With time Casey co-hosted a morning show and had more slots to fill as a D.J., becoming New York’s voice on all things hip-hop. He also mixed on radio shows Sirius X.M. and Power 105 radio.
In 2010 Casey, Charlamagne Tha God, and Angela Yee began hosting “The Breakfast Club” on Power 105. The show was so successful that it got syndicated on satellite and terrestrial radio a year later. Casey made music through the mid-2010s, working with Yo Gotti, 2 Chainz, Fetty Wap, and D.J. Slink. 2020 was a year of recognition for the seasoned mixer. He was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame for his impressive career as a D.J. and producer. Casey’s most recent passion project is the book “Real Life, Real Love: Life Lessons on Joy, Pain, and the Magic That Holds Us Together,” co-authored with his wife, Gia Casey, and released on April 19, 2022.
