He worked for the Greene Beverage Company as a driver and abandoned his academic ambitions in favor of a career in boxing.

Wilder became the mandatory challenger for the (WBC) heavyweight championship after beating Malik Scott in February 2014. On the evening of May 18, 2019, Wilder defended his WBC heavyweight championship via knockout with 43 seconds left in the first round against mandatory challenger Dominic Breazeale, ranked fourth by the WBC. On February 22, 2020, it was confirmed that Wilder would meet Tyson Fury in a rematch of their 2018 fight. Wilder was knocked out in the third round by Fury with a left hook, and overhand right combo. Wilder eventually lost the fight through a seventh-round technical knockout when his coach Mark Breland threw in the towel, losing his WBC heavyweight title.
