Background

Daniel Joseph Levy, better known as Dan Levy, was born in Toronto on August 9, 1983, to Eugene Levy and Deborah Divine. He attended high school at the North Toronto Collegiate Institute and studied film production at York University and Ryerson University. He began his career as a television presenter on M.T.V. Canada’s flagship series, “M.T.V. Live,” becoming popular because of his jolly personality. He rose to prominence as a co-host alongside Jessi Cruickshank of M.T.V. Canada’s “The After Show” and its variations like “The Hills: The After Show” and “The City: Live After Show.” However, After the show’s cancellation, Levy wrote, starred, and produced “Daniel Levy’s Holi-Do’s & Don’ts” for M.T.V.

Levy left M.T.V. in 2011 and, two years later, founded Not a Real Company Productions. The company’s first project was “Schitt’s Creek,” which propelled Levy to international prominence. The show was co-created with his father and co-starred by his sister, Sarah Levy, a prominent actress in her own right. For his work on the show, Levy was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award in four major disciplines a year after producing, writing, directing, and acting in the final season of “Schitt’s Creek.” His work on the show also earned him four Canadian Screen Awards from 18 nominations, among numerous other accolades.

In 2020, Levy and his father acted as guest hosts of “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” interviewing Catherine O’Hara and Annie Murphy. He also worked in an H.B.O. T.V. film series “Coastal Elites” with Kaitlyn Dever, Sarah Paulson, Bette Midler, and Issa Rae in the same year. It focused on the lives of five people navigating life through the COVID-19 pandemic. The next year, the actor appeared on “Saturday Night Live” with Phoebe Bridgers and signed a deal with Netflix to produce and write scripted content across T.V. and film.
