Background

Covelli Loyce Crisp was born in Los Angeles. He attended Los Angeles Pierce College and was nicknamed “Coco” by his sister because he resembled one of the main characters on the Cocoa Krispies cereal box.

The St. Louis Cardinals selected Crisp in the 1999 M.L.B. Draft, and he was named the Cardinals 2001 ‘Minor League Player of the Year.’ Crisp soon built up a reputation as an outstanding fielder and fast baserunner. He played for the Cleveland Indians before moving to left field in 2005, and was traded to the Boston Red Sox at the beginning of 2006; the team offered him a three-year, $15.5 million contract extension a few months later. However, shortly after consolidating his place, he was forced to bat seventh or eighth in the lineup after an index finger injury left him out for 42 games. Crisp’s 2006 season is best remembered for a grab against the New York Mets, on June 29.

Crisp was forced to sit out the 2007 World Series after falling over a wall at Fenway Park while attempting to catch a home run by Alex Rodriguez. Shortly afterward, he signed a one-year, five-million-dollar contract with the Oakland Athletics, hit a home run against the New York Yankees, and ended the season with an A.L. record of 49 stolen bases. Crisp re-signed with Oakland for $14 million in 2012 and was offered a renewal for the 2015 and 2016 seasons, but his playing time was soon reduced. When Crisp became a free agent in 2017, he took over as head coach of the Shadow Hills High School baseball team. He was named manager of the Mahoning Valley Scrappers for the inaugural M.L.B. Draft League season in 2021. He was hired as part of the Washington Nationals’ player development staff on January 17, 2022.
