Background
Bo Jackson was born in Bessemer, Alabama, U.S., on November 30, 1962. He is the son of A.D. Adams and Florence Bond Jackson. Jackson had a rough childhood; he was the eighth of ten siblings and grew up in a poor home and his father wasn’t around much to support his family. In fact, A.D. Adams has another family and left Jackson’s mom. Florence Bond Jackson was out of the house almost all day working to provide for her family. While growing up, Jackson used to get in a lot of trouble. He attended school in McCalla, already showing great athlete skills on the school sports teams.
When Jackson was still in high school, he received an offer from the New York Yankees to play for them. Surprisingly, Jackson declined the offer to attend Auburn University. Jackson made that tough decision because he had promised his mother he would be the first one in the family to attend college. Jackson attended Auburn University on a football scholarship. After college, in 1986, Jackson played professional baseball for the Kansas City Royal of Major League Baseball. Jackson was an ambitious man; he wasn’t willing to give up on any of his dreams. A year later, in 1987, Jackson was picked by the Los Angeles Raiders in the National Football League draft. Jackson played for the Raiders until 1991 when a hip injury forced his retirement from the football world.
As a professional baseball player, besides the Kansas City Royal, Jackson also played for Chicago White Sox and California Angels. He officially retired as an athlete in 1994. He completed his Bachelor of Science degree in Family and Child Development at Auburn University in 1995, fulfilling his promise to his mother. Jackson then did a bit of acting, making multiple television guest appearances first on “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” in 1990, “Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman,” “Moesha,” “Married… with Children” among others.
