Background

Gordon James Ramsay, famously known as Gordon Ramsay, is a British chef who was born in Johnstone, Scotland. He was born to Gordon James Ramsay, his father, and Helen Cosgrove, his mother who’s a nurse. He has three siblings; Diane, his older sibling, and Ronnie and Yvonne, his younger siblings.

Ramsay enrolled at North Oxfordshire Technical College at 19 years to study hotel management after deciding he was serious about acquiring a culinary qualification. He worked at Harvey’s for Marco Pierre White before going ahead to study French cuisine. He then worked at Le Gavroche in Mayfair under White’s tutelage before moving to Paris and working under the mentorship of Guy Savoy. Ramsay then worked as a personal chef in Bermuda on a private yacht called “Idlewild.” In 1998, he opened his restaurant, Restaurant Gordon Ramsay, in Chelsea after working some years at Rossmore. He appeared on “Faking It” and “Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares,” in which he worked closely with chefs and owners of failing restaurants helping them restore their restaurants within a week. In 2010, Ramsay became the producer of “Masterchef United States,” as well as the judge on the show, and has written countless cookbooks during his time as a chef. He has a partnership with Waterford Wedgwood, and Royal Doulton, and has won numerous awards, including the Catey Award and the award for Independent Restaurateur of the Year.

Ramsay grew up abused and neglected by his father and became a pot washer when he was 16 years old. He tied the knot with Cayetana Elizabeth Hutcheson, better known as Tana, in 1996. The couple has four children; Megan, Holly, Jack, and Matilda, and they started the Gordon and Tana Ramsay Foundation which aims to make meaningful contributions to charities.

Why We Love Gordon Ramsay

  1. He's the best chef

One thing we can all agree on, even his haters, is that Ramsay is by far one of the best chefs to exist in our time. His restaurant has won three Michelin stars.

  2. He prides himself on his work ethic

Ramsay may be defined by many as harsh and lacking empathy, but all he aims to teach is that to be great you need to want that just as bad for yourself. If you want to be a great chef, you need to be open to correction and criticism from great chefs and learn to perfect what was wrong. Ramsay treats his children just the same so they learn to be grounded and do things for themselves rather than enjoying and reaping the fruits of his hard work

  3. He gives back to society

Tempered and intimidating as he is, Ramsay has a very soft spot for children and has been working with the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children. The Gordon and Tana Ramsay Foundation has been raising funds for the hospital to support the U.K.'s seriously ill children and give them another chance to live their best lives.

5 Surprising Facts

  1. He would've been a soccer player

Initially, Ramsay aspired to be a soccer player like many young boys, but due to an unfortunate injury to his knee, his dream was short-lived and he became a chef instead.

  2. He never eats airplane food

Being a world-class chef, there is no doubt that Ramsay knows all about where airplane food has been and where it's going.

  3. Ramsay has had cosmetic surgery

He's had botox done to fill in some of his face wrinkles after some comments from the press and his children.

  4. His children won't inherit his fortune

Ramsay believes in working hard to get what you want and where you want, so he’s leaving no money to his kids in his will and they don't get to board first-class with him when traveling together.

  5. He refuses to watch his shows

He'd rather go out for dinner than watch himself on T.V. and get self-obsessed with the way he walks.
